Quantum Computing Workshop
  • Quantum computing will be a threat to our critical infrastructure in as little as 8 years and we are not prepared
  • The current critical infrastructure is vulnerable and quantum-safe cryptography is not commercially available
  • Training and education is required to understand the threat and to build safe solutions
Cybersecurity is at the forefront of our industry as there is an urgent need to protect our infrastructure against attacks. The National Cyber Security Strategy stresses the need to fortify public and private infrastructure against ever increasingly sophisticated threats. One such threat is the anticipated arrival of the first quantum computer within the next 8-15 years. 
The encryption which protects the current cyber infrastructure will no longer be unbreakable once quantum computers are on board. It is anticipated that quantum computers will break existing encryption within mere minutes. The plans to update our cryptography infrastructure cannot wait until then. We need to lay the foundations for quantum-safe cryptography now, before it’s too late.
The workshop will:
  1. Introduce the potential positive applications of quantum computers, the fundamental elements of the problem posed by quantum computers, including an outline of the impact on blockchains
  2. Outline the proposed solutions, their strengths and weaknesses, and some of the key challenges to practical deployment
  3. Focus on quantum risk management, including quantum risk assessments and migration strategies available to address the threats
Topics to be covered will include:
  • What is a quantum computer? Why do people want to build one?
  • How does it impact cybersecurity?
  • How can we defend against quantum attacks? What is the process and timeline? What is the state of readiness of deployable quantum-resistant cryptography?
  • Available solutions, including open-source
  • How real is this threat, and when do we need to start doing something?

Dr. Vlad Gheorghiu is the CEO, President and Co-Founder of softwareQ Inc. and a researcher at the Institute for Quantum Computing. Vlad graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a PhD in Theoretical Physics. Vlad's interests range from quantum computing and quantum software to quantum cryptanalysis, quantum error correction and applications of machine learning to the quantum domain.
